Topic 1 In chapter 3 the hypothesis is presented that intelligence is a basic ingredient of the universe and forms an integral part of its fabric along with matter-energy and space-time. Consciousness is considered to be the most important ingredient of intelligence. More individuals share this opinion as time progresses. David Chalmers, in his book “The Conscious Mind” has proposed that consciousness, like energy and mass, is a fundamental property of the universe, and exists to varying degrees in all things. He believes consciousness is a universal phenomenon.1 Gary Schwartz, author of “The Living Energy Universe”, states that quantum physics tells us that everything is ultimately information and energy.2 In the Integrated Theory of Intelligence the use of the word information is considered to be similar to using the word intelligence. Intelligence is considered to be equal to information plus consciousness. Information = Intelligence – Consciousness OR Intelligence = Information + Consciousness Schwartz is also quoted as saying “There are two fundamental non-material concepts used throughout the sciences – information and energy.” Information refers to pattern, form, and structure. Energy refers to force and power, the capacity to do work and overcome resistance. Energy does the work of information. Information has energy, and energy has information. Information without energy is “powerless”; energy without information is “purposeless.”3 Information represents the form or structure of a system and energy is the force or function that moves the system enabling it to emerge and evolve. Information and energy are both stored in systems as memory.4 This represents close agreement with the hypothesis presented in the Integrated Theory of Intelligence. The only possible disagreement would be whether there is consciousness associated with the information that he refers to. Rolf Landaur believes the standard approach to physics needs modification. Information processing and the laws of physics must be tightly entangled.5 He suggests that the physics of information may bring understanding to the seeming time symmetry of quantum mechanics where both forward and backward time are permitted.6 Seigfried also quotes Werner Heisenberg paraphrasing Heraclitus (a Greek philosopher) and states “Information is indeed the material of which all the elementary particles, all atoms and therefore all things in general are made, and at the same time information is also that which is moved… information can be transformed into movement, heat, light and tension. Information can be regarded as the cause of all changes in the world.”7 Tom Seigfried also discusses how information processing occurs within biological systems. He indicates that evolution through natural selection has resulted from the processing of an immense amount of information. DNA represents an unbroken record of stored information stretching back to the beginning of life.8 Cells are tiny chemical calculators processing a tremendous amount of information as they perform their function.9 DNA makes RNA which directs the manufacture of proteins. It operates somewhat like a computer with DNA acting as the hard drive, permanently storing information. RNA acts as a floppy disc copying information off the hard drive. It carries the information from the cell nucleus to the ribosomes, which are miniature factories. Ribosomes read the information stored in the RNA to construct proteins by stringing amino acids together.10 Proteins are the equivalent of RAM.11 Protein receptor molecules inside a cell, acting like sentries, poke out through the cells membrane somewhat like an antenna to listen for messages. They convey information to the cell’s interior about what is going on outside in the surrounding environement.12 They do this by snatching particular messenger molecules that they have been programmed to identify. As the messenger molecules are transported into the nucleus they exchange information with the DNA resulting in the formation of new proteins that in turn can respond to the external environmental demands. This processing of information is much more sophisticated than any computer yet devised can handle.13 Seigfried also makes the following observation. Bacteria and other unicellular organisms have no brains yet they successfully process an immense amount of information as they respond to their environment. They figure out how to swim toward food and away from toxins.14 Enzymes play an integral part in the processing of information. They act very much like a switch either activating or deactivating various chemical processes. They help shape molecules by cutting them apart or connecting them together.15 George Johnson also states that gradually over the past half century some scientists have come to believe that information must be added to matter, energy, space and time as a basic ingredient of our universe.16 He also maintains that the measurer must always be included as part of the system resulting in a need for a law of conservation of information analogous to the laws of conservation of energy and momentum.17 This correlates closely with the Integrated Theory of Intelligence which states (p. 4.1) “Intelligence can neither be created nor destroyed, and its overall quantity remains constant throughout the universe even though its spatial concentration is continuously changing over time as it discovers innovative ways to relate to matter and energy.” Also stated, “The terms information and intelligence, though not synonymous, can be used interchangeably in any mathematical equation. The mathematical relationship of information to entropy is essentially the same as that of intelligence to entropy. An increase in information parallels any increase in intelligence” (p. 4.1). Johnson states that information should be admitted as another fundamental property of the universe along with mass and energy. He also discusses Wojciech Zurek’s definitions of information. He defines basically two kinds of information. Shannon’s information which measures how improbable a structure is. An intricately patterned system is highly unlikely, and therefore requires a lot of information to describe it. Algorithmic Information describes the opposite perspective and is a highly patterned compressible system that takes fewer bits to describe than a random one.18 Zurek also proposes that we define physical entropy as consisting of two reciprocal quantities. One is the ignorance of the observer and is measured by Shannon’s statistical entropy. The other is the randomness of the object which is measured by its algorithmic entropy – the smallest number of bits required to record it in memory. The ignorance of the measurer decreases as its memory increases so that their sum remains constant.19 Evan Harris Walker in his book, “The Physics of Consciousness” states that consciousness may be found to exist elsewhere within the universe without being a part of a living body or other data processing system. Everything that exists is ultimately the result of quantum mechanical events. The universe is inhabited by an almost unlimited number of discrete conscious, usually non-thinking, entities. There is also another part of mind that extends beyond consciousness that links to the infinite.20 Will is a quantum mechanical state selection that goes on within the brain.21 Will initiates a state vector collapse (wave function) of a synapse out of all that could fire resulting in purposeful behavior.22 The will channel causes the events in the brain and those in the external world to go hand in hand with what happens in our consciousness. Mind can affect matter, even our brains, and distant matter and minds can affect us as well. The observer is tied to all other observers and these observers collectively select the reality that we experience.23 We are forced to conclude, based on quantum mechanics, that all observers share a fragment of their mind experience non-locally and non-temporally. Our minds are linked by the observation process of state vector collapse. About 0.1% of what we are in our mind’s being is shared with all others in existence.24 We have discovered that quantum states and mind are one in the same thing. Quantum fluctuations are the stuff of consciousness and will. Mind stuff was the beginning point of the universe and out of this formless void everything has been created. In the beginning there was the Quantum Mind, a first cause – itself time independent and non-local, that created space-time and matter-energy.25 Walker also quotes the Gospel of Thomas. “I am He who exists from the undivided… It is I who am the light… I am the All. Everything came from Me and everything extends unto Me. Split a piece of wood, and I am there. Part the stone, and you will find me.”26 With the development of quantum theory, the observer emerges as a co-equal in the act of creation. Objective reality as we perceive it is not the true fabric of reality. Consciousness that defines the observer has its own fundamental existence. The quantum mind is the basic reality.27 The quantum mind lies behind the selection of quantum events and determines the outcome of quantum mechanically entangled states. The direct intervention process of this quantum mind is a property of the greater consciousness or universal mind.28 In conclusion, Walker states that consciousness is part of the basic fabric of the universe that is entangled with quantum events as defined by quantum mechanics and displays the property of will resulting in purposeful behavior. Each individual consciousness is also a part of the greater consciousness or universal mind. This is in very close agreement with the Integrated Theory of Intelligence. In the book, “Closer to Truth”, by Robert Lawrence Kuhn, physicist Fred Alan Wolf is quoted as saying, “Physics and mind will both be seen as approximations of a deeper reality. The separation between mind and matter will be seen as an artifact that came about through an accident of history, and this will reflect a deeper unity.29 Ervin Laszlo in his book, “Science and the Akashic Field – An Integral Theory of Everything” published in 2004 comes closer than any other book written to date, to support most of the hypothesis presented in the Integrated Theory of Intelligence. He describes what he refers to as the A-field, which is a universal-wide holographically distributed information field that is actively involved in the evolutionary process. It provides the basis for a universal mind or memory. Jun recognized this field and called it the collective unconscious. A-field refers to the Akashic field. Akasha is an ancient Sanskrit word meaning ether or all-pervasive space. In Indian philosophy it was considered to be the first and most fundamental of the five elements, four of which were recognized by the early Greeks to include fire, water, earth, and air; Laszlo indicates that a new paradigm is emerging in science that describes an informed universe rooted in the rediscovery of the Akashic or A-field. This A-field is a vacuum based holofield that permeates the entire universe. Within this A-field information is generated throughout, conserved and conveyed by and among all of its parts. It is strongly interconnected and builds on the information that it has already generated. Space is not empty but is the origin and the memory of all things that exist or have ever existed. This cosmic information field connects all organisms and minds in the biosphere, as well as all particles, stars and galaxies throughout the universe. The A-field continuously interacts with matter at every level from the subatomic to the cosmic, to influence the way that every living thing grows, adapts and evolves.30 All things in the real world are linked together by flows of both energy and information within the A-field.31 This information is carried by superposed vacuum wave-interference patterns that are equivalent to holograms.32 A given wave pattern will conjugate or resonate to a particular wave pattern within the welter of many patterns in the hologram resulting in transference of a thought or concept. The hologram of the universe is conjugate with the holograms of galaxies and this encompassing hologram results in a coherence among galaxies, which correlates the paths of their evolution.33 The A-field also results in correlation among an organism’s molecules, cells, and organs producing an instantaneous coherence within the organism. This conjugate relationship exists even in molecules that are distant from each other.34 The A-field also links all organisms to their surrounding environment including the genome. This allows for subtle informing of the genome resulting in changes within the organism, which increases its ability to adapt to its changing environment. This is a form of “informational seeding,” or a way for a guided evolutionary process to occur.35 The A-field would appear to contain what might be called torsion waves that transmit and record information in space by creating a microwarping of space itself. When two or more torsion waves interact they form an interference pattern similar to that seen on a holographic plate resulting in the recording of information. This produces a space with a texture resembling vacuum vortices that records the information on the ensemble of particles of which the vortices have interfered. The vacuum thus both records and carries information on atoms, molecules, cells, organisms and populations and ecologies of organisms. Information on the state of the entire universe can be recorded throughout all of time.36 Everything we experience during our lifetime has cerebral functions associated with them. These functions have waveform equivalents that create information wave vortices. These waves propagate in the vacuum and interfere with waves created by other people, which then give rise to complex holograms. Every human, as well as other life forms, have left their holographic imprints in the A-field. The individual holograms integrate into a super-hologram forming a collective information pool of humankind and even of all Lifekind. Reading out what we each read into the field is the physical basis of memory. We can literally recall from this field all things we have ever experienced. In the right mindset others can also tap into our own memories, leading to telepathic communication.37 An example of telepathic communication which has been documented to occur between twins is a phenomenon referred to as “twin pain” where one twin senses pain or trauma from the other twin as it is occurring.38 Other documented examples of telepathic communication are given in Laszlo’s book, all being communicated through the A-field. Laszlo also discusses the similarities between quantum correlations and entanglements and how there are similar types of transpersonal connections between all life forms and their environment.39 He states that information in the form of “in-formation” represents an active ingredient that permeates the entire universe just like matter & energy.40 This “in-formation” is essentially the same substance as intelligence referred to in the Integrated Theory of Intelligence. Harold Puthoff has also concluded that interactions in the domains of nature as well as of mind, are mediated by a fundamental information field at the heart of the universe.41 Freeman Dyson has stated that “Matter in quantum mechanics is not an inert substance but an active agent, constantly making choices between alternative possibilities… It appears that mind, as manifested by the capacity to make choices is to some extent inherent in every electron.”42 Alfred North Whitehead has also indicated that even elementary particles are endowed with a form and level of protoconsciousness. He and others have come to believe that all matter is conscious and no consciousness is immaterial. There is no real division between mind and matter.43 Both mind and matter are fundamental elements of reality.44 Astronaut Edgar Mitchell had a mystical experience while in space and from it concluded that information is part of the very substance of the universe and is present everywhere and along with energy represents a “dyad”. He believes that the quantum vacuum is the holographic information that records the historical experience of matter.45 He also indicated that in a higher state of consciousness we can enter into deep communication with the universe during which the awareness of every cell of the body coherently resonates with “the holographically embedded information in the quantum zero-point energy field.”46 This is what is occurring during a peak experience as defined in the Integrated Theory of Intelligence.
