Topic 4 In the book “Schrodinger’s Kittens and the Search for Reality”, by John Gribbin he states that Stephen Hawking indicates that as the universe expands so does space itself. This stretches space simultaneously in all directions. As I indicate in one of the discussions pertaining to a theory of everything which is accessed through a link outside the book’s text, there are only 4 dimensions to our reality and that the 10 or 11 required by Superstring Theory can be explained on the basis of the warping which occurs with space as it expands. For further discussion of this concept please click on the “Superstring Theory” link on the “Keyword Discussions” page. Tom Seigfried in his book, “The Bit and the Pendulum”, indicates space is not just an empty receptacle for matter and energy and forces. They are intricate parts of space. A particle of matter should be thought of as a piece of knotted up space. A particle of matter in quantum theory is said to warp space. However, in actuality, the warping and the particle are really the same thing.1 John Gribbin also addresses the concept of the interrelationship of all particles throughout the universe. He indicates that an electron here on earth knows where it is in relation to the charged particles everywhere else throughout the universe, as does every other electron. Each electron is instantaneously aware of its position in relation to all other charged particles. All particles are part of a holistic electromagnetic web filling the universe. Every particle in existence influences every other particle in distant galaxies even though no information carrying signal can travel between galaxies faster than light.2 Topic 4 Bibliography
